December 1, 2008

Following the release of Monday’s AP and ESPN/USA Today polls, both Gonzaga and Connecticut are ranked among the top five college basketball teams in the nation. The teams are on course for a rare non-conference game featuring two teams with top five rankings.

The Huskies and Bulldogs will meet Saturday, December 20th in the Comcast Battle in Seattle. Both teams are coming off of impressive preseason tournament victories, with UConn defeating Wisconsin to win the Paradise Jam tournament in the Virgin Islands and the Bulldogs capturing the Old Spice Classic title by defeating Tennessee in a rematch of the 2007 Comcast Battle in Seattle.

The last time two teams ranked in the top five faced each other in a non-conference game, #2 Tennessee defeated #1 Memphis 66-62, February 23rd 2008 in Memphis.

North Carolina remained the unanimous # 1 team in the country with 31 first-place votes in the ESPN/USA Today Poll. The Tar Heels are followed by # 2 UConn, # 3 Pittsburgh, and # 4 Duke, with the Zags rounding out the top five.

The Bulldogs and the Huskies last met on December 1, 2007 in Boston with the Zags prevailing by the score of 85 to 82. Connecticut holds a 2-1 all-time series lead over Gonzaga.
